Автор, будучи очевидцем і учасником подій, зумів передати всю гіркоту та відчай, які супроводжували цю війну. Есе Джорджа Орвелла, включені в збірку, додають ще більше глибини, піднімаючи важливі питання, які залишаються актуальними й сьогодні.
