The play was written in March 1923 in Berlin. The choice of theme and plot of the play was influenced by two events in Nabokov’s life: the tragic death of his father, V. D. Nabokov, who was killed on March 28, 1922, and the dissolution of his engagement to Svetlana Siewert in January 1923. The theme of “inertia” of life after death was developed then by Nabokov in the story “Catastrophe” (1924) and the story “The Spy” (1930).
