Nicephorus Gregoras (c. 1290–1361) - Byzantine polymath, historian and astronomer, participant in theological, so-called “hesychast” disputes of the mid-14th century, in which he acted as an opponent of Gregory Palamas. Author of a number of hagiographic works, works on rhetoric, theological treatises and natural science, mainly astronomical, works. “History of the Romans” is Grigora’s most important work and one of the main sources on Byzantine history of the 13th–14th centuries. Her 37 books cover the period from 1204 to 1359, but in most detail the author describes the historical figures of his time and the events he witnessed and, sometimes, participated in as a person close to the imperial court. The second volume, containing books XII to XΧIII and the beginning of book XΧIV, translated into Russian for the first time, pays special attention to the Council of Constantinople in 1351, at which Nikephoros was condemned for his anti-Palamite position. He analyzes the arguments of his opponents and presents his counterarguments, based on the writings of the church fathers and ancient philosophers, extensively quoted by him.
