Автор майстерно розкриває всі аспекти внутрішньої структури римської армії, починаючи з військової реформи Гая Марія і до початку III століття нашої ери. Його детальний аналіз символіки, озброєння та екіпіровки легіонерів, а також повсякденного життя солдатів, їхніх обов'язків, нагород і покарань надає читачеві унікальне уявлення про те, як функціонувала римська армія.
