The book contains the final part of the novel "Pain and Anger", which tells the tragic story of the inhabitants of the Poltava village of Tarasivka. The millstones of forced collectivization, famine, repressions and the darkest hour - wartime calamity - did not pass them by. Other novels and short stories diversify the theme of becoming a totalitarian sovka. These works have a difficult fate: they were either not published - for example, "Black Raven" lay on the writer's desk for twenty years and was first published in English in Australia, or the hand of the censor generously destroyed them. What's more: in order for them to finally see the world even in this form, the author had to distort the text with ideological nonsense. "That's why we had to restore this novel, restoring the mercilessly cut episodes that breathed the truth," wrote Anatoly Dimarov in the preface to "The Captain's Son". "Folio" publishing house republishes works that the author has completely restored.
