Книга «Доктор Барри: жизнь и приключения» — это удивительная мелодрама, которая погружает читателя в атмосферу девятнадцатого века. История Маргарет Балкли, которая решает изменить свою судьбу, выдавая себя за мужчину и становясь врачом Джеймсом Барри, захватывает с первых страниц. Автор мастерски передает внутренние переживания героини, её борьбу с предрассудками общества и стремление к самовыражению. Особенно впечатляет, как в сюжете переплетаются темы любви и тайны, когда Маргарет влюбляется и её секрет становится общим с возлюбленным. Однако, несмотря на все плюсы, некоторые моменты показались затянутыми, и не все персонажи раскрыты до конца. Рассказчик Эдвард Лир добавляет интересный колорит, но местами его стиль может быть сложен для восприятия.
