Volodymyr Shukhevich (1849—1915) is a prominent Ukrainian ethnographer, folklorist, publicist, teacher, cultural and educational and public figure, active member of the Scientific Society named after T. Shevchenko, the grandfather of the chief commander of the UPA, General Roman Shukhevich.The greatest result of his many years of ethnographic work was the five-volume monograph "Hutsulshchyna", devoted to the study of the material and spiritual culture of the Galician Hutsuls, published in 1899-1908 by Naukov by the Shevchenko Society in Lviv and printed in four volumes. "Hutsulshchyna" was highly appreciated by domestic and foreign figures of science and culture, and Ivan Franko noted that the value of V. Shukhevich's work is best evidenced by the fact that it was translated into Polish while it was still in manuscript.The edition included the first and the second part of "Hutsulshchyna". The first part, edited by I. Franko, contains eight sections: physiographic, ethnological, statistical reviews, Hutsul village, settlement, burden, church, food. The second part describes in detail the usual occupations of Hutsuls (mowing hay, fishing, shooting), as well as home crafts (metalworking, carpentry, fur-dressing, weaving, etc.).
