LONGFELOW, HENRY WADSWORTH (Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth) (1807–1882), American poet. Born February 27, 1807 in Portland (Maine). In Longfellow's first poetry collection, Voices of the Night, 1839, the poem Psalm of Life was published, which gained him fame in all levels of society. Ballads and Other Poems (1842) included The Death of the Evening Star, The Village Blacksmith, and Excelsior.
