FROM THE PUBLISHER This edition of L. P. Sabaneev’s book “Life and Catching of Freshwater Fish” was prepared based on the third edition of the book “Fishes of Russia”, published in 1911.L. P. Sabaneev is one of the classics of Russian hunting literature and literature on sport fishing. Leonid Pavlovich’s merit lies in his widespread knowledge of ichthyology. At the same time, his works always highlight what is truly important and useful. All the issues he raised are presented in such a generally understandable, fascinating form that makes his works accessible to the general public. The form of his works, especially on issues of life and fishing, is distinguished by completeness, clarity, simplicity, brevity and power of expression. In its completeness, the description of the life of fish and methods of amateur fishing, their book by L.P. Sabaneev has no equal not only in domestic, but also in foreign literature devoted to these issues. Considering the huge interest of a wide range of readers in this book, the State Agricultural Publishing House of the Ukrainian SSR undertook a real re-publication of this work, which until now was a great bibliographic rarity. This edition completely preserves the writing style of L.P. Sabaneev, as well as all the methods of amateur fishing he recommended. In some cases, the necessary notes on the taxonomy and biology of fish are made, based on the current state of ichthyological science. Some of the methods of catching fish described by L.P. Sabaneev are now classified as exterminators as prohibited, and their use is equated to poaching. Therefore, their description is omitted. Also, in a few cases, this publication omits expressions or details that are not accepted in our time and that are not of interest to the modern reader. The book is intended not only for a wide range of fans of sport fishing with rods, but can also be useful for fish farmers, practitioners of collective and state farms, and fishing workers organizations.
