“The “Historical Tragedy” “Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice” was conceived by Byron in 1817, when he, arriving in Venice, first saw the council chamber in the Doge’s Palace with a black veil in the place where the portrait should have been executed the conspirator sovereign.
