Heldskalla - the ancient temple of the Mist Beings who once inhabited Sirius Five - is to be raised from the bottom of Mare Nostrum. The mighty Glimmung gathers professionals from all over the Universe for this mission. Among them is Earthman Joe Fernwright, a master ceramic restorer. The success of the event is not obvious. “Restoration will be followed by failure,” reads a prophecy from the Book of Kalends, and Mare Nostrum tosses Joe a strikingly beautiful ceramic vase that carries an ominous message.
