Accountant Pavel Chilikov turns to private detective Tatyana Ivanova for help with a request to find the culprit in the murder of his wife Nadenka. The wife was carrying business papers in the car, with which Pavel intended to blackmail his presumptuous boss. Despite the fact that the client suspects the boss of the crime, Tatyana soon becomes convinced that the latter, although a complete scoundrel, is not a murderer. And why should he go for a wet job? The ill-fated documents turned out to be hopelessly overdue, and their value was a figment of the sick imagination of the would-be accountant. But a dead woman on the highway is a sad reality, and Ivanova undertakes to understand the reasons for the absurd death and its strange circumstances....
