Книга професора Честера Старра - це справжній скарб для всіх, хто цікавиться історією Римської імперії та військовими морськими силами. Автор детально розглядає еволюцію флоту від часів Октавіана Августа до Костянтина Великого, наводячи численні літературні та епіграфічні джерела, що робить його дослідження надзвичайно ґрунтовним. Особливо вражає те, як Старр вміло передає життя та повсякденність моряків, які, незважаючи на відсутність епічних подвигів, виконували важливі функції для стабільності імперії. Книга також містить цікаві факти про патрулювання територій та забезпечення безпеки, що робить її не лише історичним, а й практичним посібником.
