Mr. Dombey, a wealthy London merchant, puts all his hopes in his sickly son Paul to succeed him in running the firm, and ignores his good daughter Florence. The firm is nearly ruined by a trusted employee named Carker who also runs away with Dombey's second wife, the scheming Edith Granger. This was the first novel in which Dickens attempted to portray the upper classes as well as the lower, and it also features strong female characters of all types and moral persuasions, if not a lot of depth. Another primary theme played out by various characters is the way in which adults mold (and ruin) their children.

Вражаючий роман про сімейні цінності та соціальні стосунки

Книга "Домбі і син" є справжнім шедевром Чарльза Діккенса, який глибоко досліджує складні стосунки між батьками та дітьми, а також соціальні нерівності в Лондоні 19 століття. Містер Домбі, зосереджений на своїй амбіції та бізнесі, ігнорує свою дочку Флоренс, що створює глибокі емоційні конфлікти, які змушують читача задуматися про справжні цінності в житті. Діккенс майстерно зображує як вищі, так і нижчі класи, надаючи читачеві можливість заглянути в різні аспекти суспільства. Сильні жіночі персонажі, такі як інтриганка Едіт Ґрейнджер, додають глибини сюжету, а також підкреслюють важливість жіночої ролі в суспільстві. Хоча переклад тексту може містити деякі недоліки, загальна якість та емоційна насиченість твору повністю компенсують це.
