The first sniper units appeared in the 18th century, during the American War of Independence, but the First World War became a real paradise for snipers. After the start of the Great Patriotic War, the USSR began extensive training of snipers, who began to be trained not only in special schools, but also in courses of OSOAVKHIM, Vsevobuch, as well as directly in the troops. By February 1942, there were 6,000 snipers on the Leningrad Front alone, and in 1943, special sniper battalions were formed within the 29th and 70th armies.
