The name Epictetus is a slave nickname meaning “bought.” The great Roman Stoic philosopher was born a slave, but died a free man, in old age, having managed to gain great fame and gain the patronage of Emperor Hadrian himself. Like Socrates, Epictetus did not leave behind books, preferring to share his wisdom in lively conversation with faithful students. However, his instructions were written down by others, his wise speeches were quoted in their works by eminent scientists, and thus fragments of Epictetus’ instructions have survived to this day. This publication publishes a translation of Epictetus’s “Conversations” by Vladimir Chertkov, a close friend and like-minded person of Leo Tolstoy, as well as aphorisms, which are excerpts from the works of various authors, collected by the classical philologist Vasily Alekseev.
