The book, for the first time in Russian historiography, examines the attitude of American society to the war with Great Britain in 1812–1815. The events fit into the context of the Napoleonic wars and chronologically coincide with the Patriotic War of 1812 and the foreign campaigns of Russian troops. The perception of this war in American historiography and the historical memory of the people is very contradictory, from praise as the second War of Independence, which created the national anthem or the image of Uncle Sam, to sharp criticism of an unnecessary and senseless conflict, “Mr. Madison’s War”, started for the sake of party goals and personal ambition, during which the Americans suffered national disgrace and their capital was burned by the enemy. An analysis of the state of American society on the eve and during the Anglo-American War is given, and attention is paid to discussions in the American Congress. For the first time in its history, the United States declared war on another state, and congressmen supported the president. Interesting is the material about Russia's attitude to the Anglo-American conflict and the position of the Americans in connection with the Patriotic War of 1812.
