Udana is the third book of the Khuddaka Nikaya of the Pali Canon. The title can be translated as “inspired sayings.” This section includes (mostly in poetic form) 80 such sayings, each of which is preceded by a narration of the situation in which the Buddha uttered these words. Udana consists of eight chapters (vagga), each of which contains ten suttas. Each Udana sutta contains the line: “Then, realizing the significance of this, the Blessed One said...”. It is because of these sayings (udan) that the book received its corresponding title.
