"History of the Angles" by Henry, Archdeacon of Huntingdon is one of the most striking and interesting monuments of English medieval history writing. Henry worked on this large-scale work for about two decades - from the mid-30s to the mid-50s of the 12th century. In its final form, the History presents a coherent account of Britain's past from Brutus (the legendary ancestor of the British tribes) to the accession to the throne in 1154 of King Henry II Plantagenet. The chronological presentation of events is interspersed, in the tradition of medieval “rhetorical history writing,” with discussions on moral themes, historical anecdotes (about King Canute, who gave orders to the waves; about the death of King Henry I, who ate lampreys, etc.), fictional speeches, as well as poetic inserts , for the most part - the authorship of Henry himself. The History of the Angles enjoyed great fame throughout the Middle Ages and had a significant influence on later historiographical tradition.
