The novel "Addition to the Journey to the West", entitled in the Russian translation "New Adventures of the Monkey King", is one of the most original works of its genre in old China. Written on the eve of the collapse of the Ming Empire (1368-1644) and the Manchu invasion, it bears the deep stamp of that turbulent and unusual era - the era of acute crisis of medieval society, a decisive revision of traditional values, unprecedented looseness of thought and imagination and, most importantly, a newly awakened need for thorough, even mercilessly thorough - a study of the world of the human soul.
