The Brasher Doubloon is a rare gold coin produced in 1787 by the jeweler Brasher. This is the only "doubloon" in which the master's initials - EB - are minted on the chest of the eagle depicted on the coin. The other five known Brasher Doubloons have the initials on the left wing of the eagle. The Brasher Doubloon is popular among collectors because it is believed to be the first dollar coin minted in gold in the United States. The coin, weighing 26.66 grams (less than an ounce of gold), was valued at $15 in 1787. The coin was called a "doubloon" because it weighed about the same as a Spanish gold doubloon, common in colonial America. The doubloon was missing from a locked safe by a thief - a member of the family, and Philip Marlowe must find him.
