The action takes place in a resort town on the coast of England, in the house of an elderly couple - the talkative and sloppy landlady Meg and her good-natured, silent husband Petey, who rent out rooms with breakfast to a few guests. In fact, there is only one guest at the moment, the degraded former pianist Stanley, for whom Meg feels an annoying, hardly maternal affection...
