The problem of choosing the source of the text of the poem “Callies” arose in Lermontov studies more than a hundred years ago, but in the 1920s it was removed from discussion and is not currently being raised. Meanwhile, in our opinion, it was resolved incorrectly and requires revision precisely taking into account the modern view of “unreliable sources.” But for this to become clear, a fairly detailed excursion into the field of Lermontov historiography is required.
