Already the first trip put Major General Mikhail Vasilyevich Pevtsov (1843-1902) among the outstanding explorers of Central Asia. Many places in Altai and the Dzungarian Gobi, which no traveler had visited before Pevtsov, were excellently described and carefully mapped by his expedition. M. V. Pevtsov went on his first expedition in 1876. The object of the study was Dzungaria, a steppe region in northwestern China. The results of the trip, published in “Travel Sketches of Dzungaria,” immediately put S. V. Pevtsov among the leading researchers of Central Asia. “Essays on a trip to Mongolia and the northern provinces of inland China” is the result of Pevtsov’s second expedition, undertaken in 1878-1879. And ten years later, after the sudden death of N. M. Przhevalsky, the Russian Geographical Society appointed Pevtsov head of the Tibet expedition. Twelve years of life, almost 20 thousand kilometers traveled, countless geographical, geological, ethnographic discoveries, unique collections that included more than 10 thousand specimens flora and fauna of the places visited by the traveler - the outstanding Russian pioneer talks about this and much more in his books. Northern China, Eastern Mongolia, Kashgaria, Dzungaria - the epithet “endless” is quite suitable for these regions, but they are not at all “barren” and certainly not “uninteresting”.
