This is the first time such a publication has been offered in Russian. It included ancient Greek elegies that have been preserved in full or in fragments since the 7th century. BC. and ending with the 1st century AD. Common origin, common poetics and common metrics made it possible to combine in the collection, along with elegies, also epigrammatic verses, which, without being the original real inscriptions, i.e. dedications or epitaphs, have been preserved in the book tradition and are very close to elegies. Such a combination seems quite logical due to the fact that there is a widespread erroneous opinion about the Roman elegy (Propertius, Tibullus, Ovid) as poetry that for the first time combined Greek elegy and epigram. Many texts have never yet been translated into Russian. Although some passages from the elegies of Theognis were known in translations earlier (A. Piotrovsky, V. Veresaev), in the collection the entire Theognis was translated completely anew, including the second book.
