Walter Map (1130/1135—1209/1210) was an English clergyman and writer who was part of the entourage of King Henry II Plantagenet of England, whose court in the second half of the 12th century was an important cultural and literary center of Western Europe. Map played a significant role in the intellectual environment of the English kingdom and already during his lifetime enjoyed a reputation among his contemporaries as a wit. A native of Wales, he took part in the birth of the legend of King Arthur. Walter Map's main work “Fun of the Courtiers” - a bizarre interweaving of court gossip, folklore stories and tales - rightfully makes him one of the main figures of the cultural Renaissance of the 12th century.
