Ann Sophia Stevens (1810/1813 - 1886) - one of the most popular writers of her era - wrote poems, essays, stories, novels with sequels, handicraft manuals, published and edited magazines. Stevens' most famous novel, Maleska, the Indian Wife of the White Hunter, is a sentimental story about the misadventures of an Indian woman who became a victim of racial prejudice. It first appeared in 1839, and in 1860 was published as the first installment in the Ten-Cent Romance series of cheap entertainment books. The original text has entered the public domain.
