In the first magazine publication, the play had the title “Others.” It was in this work that Sartre said: “Hell is other people.” This time the parable draws from mythology not just one episode, but the very starting premise - it happens in hell. Sartre's hell, however, is not at all similar to the Christian one: a building with an endless row of torture chambers, no devils, no hot pans, no other horrors. Each of the rooms is just a banal hotel room with bronze candlesticks on the fireplace and three multi-colored sofas along the walls. True, it is still somewhat refurbished: there are no visible mirrors anywhere, there are no windows either, the door is tightly closed from the outside, the bell to the bellman does not ring, and the electric light is not extinguished either day or night. And it is impossible to determine what time of day it is - in the afterlife, time has stopped. Sinners are doomed not to close their eyes for a minute forever and, for lack of mirrors, to look for their appearance in the pupils of their neighbors - this is all the punishment prepared for them, torture by wakefulness, contemplation of each other, insomnia, incessant thoughts.
