In F. Farmer's novel “Inside and Out” we find ourselves in... Hell. Demons and people who once lived on Earth live here. This very Hell is a city enclosed in a huge sphere, and all the adventures of the main character of the novel, Jack Call, boil down to one thing - the desire to find out the reason for some strange events taking place here. So we learn that all this was created by some powerful aliens. They generated souls - quanta, which traveled throughout the Universe and, entering living beings, infused them with intelligence. And this sphere, or Hell, was an incubator for such souls. And Jack was still just a soul without a body. Real body.
