Вэнс майстерно розкриває складну динаміку своєї сім'ї, демонструючи, як важко їм було пробитися через численні труднощі, з якими вони стикалися. Його щирий стиль письма та іронічний гумор роблять цю історію не лише важкою, але й надзвичайно людяною. Читачі можуть відчути всю глибину емоцій, які переживає автор, коли він розповідає про алкоголізм, наркозалежність та інші проблеми, які вплинули на його родину.
