July 5, 1855 is considered the birthday of the operetta. On this day, J. Offenbach, a native of the German city of Cologne, opened his small theater in Paris on the Champs-Elysées - Bouff-Parisien. Over the next twenty years, he wrote and staged 89 operettas in the theater.
