Nikolai Vasilievich Sklifosovsky was born on the Karantin farm. Already at the age of 24, a young graduate of the medical faculty was forced to replace him as chief physician in a small regional hospital.In the 1860s, the great Russian surgeon realized that his knowledge would be most useful to wounded soldiers. Working as a military field surgeon, the scientist took part in three military companies and gained invaluable experience in emergency operations. It was in the conditions of hostilities that the scientist developed an innovative doctrine of microbes and proposed the use of antiseptics during operations.
