The outstanding English prose writer Joseph Conrad (1857–1924) wrote about thirty books about his sea travels and adventures. A neo-romantic, a master of psychological prose, he re-created the adventure genre in his own way and had a huge influence on the literature of the 20th century. Among his students are Hemingway, Faulkner, Graham Greene, Paustovsky. The third volume of his works includes the story “Duel”; novels “Victory” and “On the Shallows.”

Конрад, як майстер психологічної прози, створює персонажів, які втілюють різні аспекти людської природи, і їхні пригоди на фоні морських пейзажів стають символом пошуку сенсу. Читання цієї книги - це не лише насолода від чудового стилю автора, а й можливість заглибитися в складні моральні дилеми, які ставлять під сумнів наші уявлення про перемогу та поразку.
