On October 20, 1947, the Committee on Un-American Activities of the US House of Representatives (created in 1934 with the purpose of exposing people sympathizing with communism and promoting its ideas; practically did not function during the war) began public hearings in Washington on un-American activities in Hollywood. Over 40 leading Hollywood figures were heard. The status of the Commission was of an extrajudicial nature. The man who appeared before her had to prove his innocence himself. There were no accused - everyone was called witnesses. It was supposed to hear 24 “friendly” and 19 “unfriendly” witnesses (of the latter, only 11 were questioned, and 10 people refused to answer questions). One of the “friendly” was the writer Ayn Rand (Alice Rosenbaum, 1905-1982).
