The novel belongs to the “planetary adventure” genre, that is, dedicated not so much to the hero or his adventures, but to the world into which fate throws him. The successive exotic landscapes of a distant planet, the complexity of its medieval culture, the cruelty of its men and the loving nature of its women, the fascinated disgust with which the astronaut stuck on it perceives this peculiar world, do not allow this book to fade into memory. Humor often misfires in other works of Farmer , but in this saga about an earthling abandoned on a distant planet, where the Middle Ages reign, and making his way to a starship that landed somewhere far away, humor was just right.
