“Two Winters in the Province and the Village” was conceived by the memoirist as a continuation of “A Wonderful Decade.” However, the continuation of the memoirs was never written. All that remains are sketches that L.N. Maikov in the preface to the collection “P. V. Annenkov and his friends" called, quite accurately characterizing their specific purpose, "memorable notes." The memoirist made these notes for himself, considering them, obviously, as preparations for future great work. In these notes for himself, preparations for the future memoir, Annenkov is much more open than he would probably remain in the text finally ready for printing. The notes preserved Annenkov’s subjective assessments, which he most likely would have removed during the work. Annenkov is much more “temperamental” here than in “A Wonderful Decade,” for example. A harsh description of I. Panaev, who is called a “big liar” and in relation to whom even the word “baseness” is used. The assessment of Herzen’s activities and his “brilliant”, but, Annenkov considers it necessary to add, at the same time “false mind” is harsh and historically unfair.
