The short story “The Fool's Love Story” by Rafael Sabatini (1875–1950) was first published in The Ludgate magazine in June 1899. This is the second of the writer's famous published works. The hero of the story is a professional fool, a court jester. The time of action is the summer of 1635. The setting is Schwerlingen, the capital of the conditional Sachsenberg kingdom in Germany. The story is written in the present tense and looks like an opera libretto (remember, Sabatini’s father and mother were opera performers) or a script, recalling, of course, the opera “Rigoletto”, as well as the image Chicot from Dumas's novels “The Countess de Monsoreau” and “Forty-Five.”
