And so it happened: the general immediately hired men to cut down the forest, began to build vast barracks, gave orders cheerfully and good-naturedly all winter, waving his stick like a saber, and in the second half of April, suddenly, in his sleep, he died without having time to pay the men for their work - money he paid tightly, reluctantly..."
