Book Wagner-Festspiele
“In Simplicissimus I found a good, although somewhat crude, caricature of the Wagnerian enthusiasm of the Munich people. Above, 1865 - a group of Munich citizens, with typical Hofbr?uh?usler faces, are frantically pushing Richard Wagner beyond the propylaea; signature: “schmeisst ihn n'aussi!” Below - 1910; the same respectable citizens in top hats and tails respectfully greet Wagner, who is forcibly dragged towards the same propylaea; signature: “Oh mit dem giebt es was zu verdienen, schmeisst ihn wieder nein.” These two cartoons fairly accurately convey the history of the Wagner Theater in Munich...”
